Echinopora horrida
Echinopora horrida is a species of coral found primarily in the Western Central Pacific region. This coral is typically associated with reef environments and can be found at depths ranging from 3 to 6 meters. As a reef-associated species, it contributes to the complex structure of coral reefs, providing habitat and shelter for various marine organisms. Echinopora horrida is a hermaphroditic coral, meaning it possesses both male and female reproductive organs. The mature gametes are released into the coelenteron and then spawned through the mouth. The life cycle includes the development of a planktonic planula larva, which undergoes metamorphosis, forming tentacles, septa, and pharynx before settling on the reef substrate. In terms of conservation, Echinopora horrida is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is also included in Appendix II of CITES.
