Echinopora mammiformis
Echinopora mammiformis is a coral species associated with tropical reefs. It is found in the Western Central Pacific, including regions like the Philippines, New Caledonia, Palau, and Indonesia. This coral is typically encountered at shallow depths, with most occurrences recorded at less than 40 meters, and the majority found shallower than 20 meters. The species belongs to the family Merulinidae and the order Scleractinia. As a member of the class Anthozoa, Echinopora mammiformis can be either gonochoric or hermaphroditic. During reproduction, mature gametes are released into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. The life cycle involves the development of a planktonic planula larva, which undergoes metamorphosis, forming tentacles, septa, and a pharynx before settling on the substrate. Divers encountering Echinopora mammiformis may observe its sessile nature on coral reefs. It has been assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. However, its inclusion in CITES Appendix II means that international trade is monitored to ensure sustainability.
