Vanuatu Combtooth Blenny

Ecsenius isos

The Vanuatu Combtooth Blenny, Ecsenius isos, is a small reef-associated fish found in the western central Pacific, specifically around New Hebrides and New Caledonia. This species can grow up to 3.2 centimeters in length. It has a distinctive appearance with an elongated, oval-shaped body and a series of dark spots on the ventrolateral surface of its head, which are present in both males and females. The dorsal fin is characterized by 12 spines and 14 to 15 soft rays, while the anal fin has 2 spines and 16 to 17 soft rays. A notable feature is the dark, somewhat diffused spot in the pectoral-fin axil, which helps in identifying this species. Ecsenius isos inhabits coral reefs, typically at depths ranging from 1 to 20 meters. It is primarily herbivorous, feeding on benthic algae and weeds. This dietary preference plays a role in the ecosystem by helping to control algal growth on the reefs. The species is oviparous, with eggs that are demersal and adhesive, attaching to substrates via a filamentous pad. The larvae are planktonic and often found in shallow coastal waters. Divers encountering the Vanuatu Combtooth Blenny can expect to see it grazing on algae, often perched on coral formations. Despite its small size, it is an important part of the reef ecosystem. According to the IUCN Red List, this species is categorized as Least Concern.
