Comical Blenny

Ecsenius opsifrontalis

The Comical Blenny, a species within the genus Ecsenius, is a small reef-associated fish found primarily in the Pacific Ocean, including regions like Micronesia, the Gilbert Islands, Rotuma, Samoa, and recently reported from Wallis Island and the Philippines. These blennies are typically found in coral-rich areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, often resting between corals, in crevices, or shallow caves. They inhabit depths from just below the surge zone to at least 30 meters, although most are found shallower than 20 meters. Reaching a maximum length of 5 centimeters, the Comical Blenny is characterized by its elongated body and distinct dorsal and anal fin structures, with 12 dorsal spines and 12-14 dorsal soft rays, along with 2 anal spines and 14-16 anal soft rays. This species feeds primarily on benthic algae and weeds, making it herbivorous. Blennies are known for their oviparous reproduction, with eggs that are adhesive and attached to substrates via a filamentous pad. Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow coastal waters. Divers encountering the Comical Blenny may find it resting in its typical habitats, displaying its characteristic behavior of perching and crevice-dwelling. It is harmless to humans and is sometimes seen in the commercial aquarium trade. According to the IUCN Red List, the Comical Blenny is categorized as Least Concern.
