Slenderjaw Moray

Enchelycore octaviana

The Slenderjaw Moray is a carnivorous eel known for its elongated body and distinctive jaw structure. It can reach a length of up to 91 centimeters. This species is found in the Eastern Pacific, ranging from the Gulf of California to Peru. Divers can encounter it in marine environments associated with coral and rocky reefs. It typically inhabits depths from 2 to 40 meters, with most individuals found shallower than 20 meters. During the day, the Slenderjaw Moray is often hidden among rocks, boulders, and crevices, making it a challenge to spot. At night, it becomes more active, foraging in the open waters. Despite its somewhat menacing appearance, the constant opening and closing of its mouth is a respiratory action and not a threat to divers. The Slenderjaw Moray is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Divers encountering this eel should respect its space, as it is harmless to humans.
