Hong Kong Grouper
Epinephelus akaara
The Hong Kong grouper (Epinephelus akaara) is a small to medium-sized grouper reaching up to 50 cm. It has a reddish-brown body densely covered with small orange-red spots, giving it an exceptionally attractive appearance. Found in the western Pacific from Japan to Vietnam and the South China Sea, including Hong Kong waters, it inhabits rocky and coral reefs at depths of 5 to 50 meters. This species is one of the most highly valued reef fish in Chinese cuisine, making it extremely vulnerable to overfishing. It is now classified as endangered by the IUCN. Conservation efforts including marine protected areas are crucial for its survival. Encountering one on a dive in Hong Kong or Japanese waters is increasingly rare, making each sighting a significant wildlife observation.
