Stripedfin Grouper

Epinephelus posteli

The Stripedfin Grouper is a rare reef-associated fish found in the subtropical waters of the Western Indian Ocean, specifically around Madagascar, Natal in South Africa, and southern Mozambique. Divers can spot this species at depths ranging from 20 to 50 meters. It is characterized by a dark reddish-brown body covered with small, irregular dark red or reddish-brown spots. These spots are interspersed with pale interspaces that form an irregular network pattern. The body also features four narrow, irregular, oblique pale bars running down and forward, and the paired fins are generally darker than the body. This species can grow up to 100 cm in total length and weigh up to 10 kg. It is an important species for South African sport fishers, particularly along the northern coast of Natal. The Stripedfin Grouper feeds on fish and invertebrates, making it a predatory species within its habitat. Divers encountering this species can expect a solitary fish that blends well with the reef environment due to its coloration and pattern.
