Hairy Eriphia

Eriphia scabricula

The Hairy Eriphia, a member of the family Eriphiidae, is a reef-associated crustacean found in the Indo-Pacific region. It inhabits shallow waters, typically at depths ranging from 0 to 6 meters. This species is known for its distinctive appearance, characterized by a rough, hairy texture that helps it blend into its reef environment. The Hairy Eriphia participates in a precopulatory courtship ritual, which involves olfactory and tactile cues, and usually practices indirect sperm transfer. As with many decapods, it is gonochoric, meaning individuals are distinctly male or female. Divers encountering the Hairy Eriphia may find it nestled among coral or rocky reefs. While it is not evaluated for conservation status, it is important for divers to observe without disturbing its natural habitat. The species is noted to be poisonous if consumed, so handling should be avoided.
