Eviota pictifacies

Eviota pictifacies is a tiny reef fish found in the Western Pacific, specifically around Indonesia. This species is usually seen in shallow fringing reefs, often resting on live massive coral colonies. These reefs are characterized by significant terrigenous sedimentation and relatively warm waters due to limited circulation, particularly in the large bay of Teluk Saleh. Divers can spot this species at depths ranging from 3 to 8 meters. Identifying Eviota pictifacies involves noting its small size, with males reaching up to 1.6 cm and females slightly larger at 1.7 cm. The fish has an elongated, oval body shape and is distinguished by its complete cephalic sensory-canal pore system. Notable features include a distinct dark occipital spot, two separate orange spots behind the eye, large round red spots on the side of the head, and bold dark-brown-and-white markings on the scleral surface of the eye. It also has a unique dorsal and anal fin-ray formula of 9/8. The species is categorized as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List. Divers encountering this species will find it harmless and an interesting subject for observation due to its unique markings and behavior.
