The Southern Longfin Goby is a small species of goby found in the coastal waters of eastern Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. Reaching a maximum length of 9 centimeters, this goby is typically found in marine and brackish environments, particularly favoring sandy estuaries with seagrass beds. Its habitat preference for seagrass beds makes it an important part of these ecosystems, where it can often be seen among the grass blades. Divers encountering the Southern Longfin Goby will likely find it in shallow waters, as 90% of recorded sightings occur at depths shallower than 10 meters. This goby is a bottom-dweller, often found resting on the sandy substrate. The Southern Longfin Goby is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Divers may enjoy observing this harmless species in its natural habitat, where it contributes to the ecological balance of sandy and seagrass environments.
