Felimare villafranca

Felimare villafranca is a colourful sea slug found along the coasts of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, ranging from France and the Bay of Biscay to Morocco, the Cape Verde Islands, the Canary Islands, and the Azores. This nudibranch typically inhabits shallow waters, with most occurrences recorded at depths shallower than 40 meters, and 90% found below 80 meters. The species is predominantly dark blue, adorned with a pattern of yellow lines that branch and curve, sometimes forming a network on its back. Distinctive features include a double yellow line at the mantle's edge and bright blue patches that contrast with the yellow. Its translucent blue rhinophores and gills further aid in identification, with white pigment present at the base and tips. The body can grow up to 40 mm in length, making it relatively small compared to other marine species. Felimare villafranca is herbivorous, primarily feeding on algae, which it grazes on as it moves along the substrate. This species is hermaphroditic, allowing individuals to engage in mating behaviors that can lead to successful reproduction. Divers may encounter this nudibranch resting on rocky surfaces or among seagrass beds, often blending into their surroundings due to their coloration. Observing its slow movements and feeding habits can provide insight into its lifestyle and ecological role. The conservation status of Felimare villafranca is not evaluated, indicating that there may be insufficient information regarding its population trends and threats. Monitoring populations and habitats remains important to ensure the survival of this species in changing ocean conditions.
