Seminole Killifish

Fundulus seminolis

The Seminole killifish (Fundulus seminolis) is a freshwater killifish in the family Fundulidae, endemic to the US state of Florida. Adults reach about 13 cm with an elongated body showing olive-green to dark green dorsal coloration, silvery flanks with dark vertical bars, and yellowish fins. Males become more intensely colored during breeding season. This species inhabits clear, vegetated springs, rivers, lakes, and marshes at depths of 0-3 meters throughout peninsular Florida. They feed on insects, small crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates near the surface and among vegetation. Seminole killifish are often encountered during freshwater dives in Florida's spring systems, where they swim in loose groups near aquatic vegetation. Their attractive coloration and endemic status make them an interesting species for underwater naturalists exploring Florida's unique freshwater ecosystems.
