Goldspot Sandgoby

Fusigobius aureus

The Goldspot Sandgoby is a small reef fish found in the tropical waters of the Western Central Pacific, including regions around Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, and the Coral Sea. It is easily recognizable by its translucent body adorned with numerous golden-yellow spots. These spots are present along the mid-line of its lateral surfaces and extend to its dorsal and caudal fins. A distinct yellow line runs obliquely across its cheek and snout, while a diaper-shaped black blotch marks the base of its caudal fin. The first dorsal fin features a large black blotch tinged with orange on its lower half. This species inhabits seaward reefs at depths ranging from 5 to 25 meters. It prefers coral reef environments where it can often be seen perching on the substrate. The Goldspot Sandgoby grows to a maximum length of approximately 3.5 cm. The conservation status of the Goldspot Sandgoby is listed as Least Concern. Divers encountering this species can expect to find it in its natural habitat, where it exhibits bottom-dwelling behavior, often perching on the reef surface.
