Gelliodes fibulata
Gelliodes fibulata is a species of sponge belonging to the family Niphytidae, commonly found in the Indo-West Pacific region. This sessile organism inhabits tropical waters and is typically found at depths ranging from 0 to 100 meters. Most occurrences are reported at shallower depths, with 93% of records indicating presence at depths less than 40 meters, and 90% at depths shallower than 30 meters. Divers can encounter this sponge on various substrates where it remains attached and immobile. The life cycle of Gelliodes fibulata involves a hermaphroditic reproductive strategy, characteristic of the class Demospongiae. The zygote develops into a free-swimming parenchymella larva, which eventually settles on a suitable substrate and grows into a mature sponge. This life cycle allows the species to disperse over a wide range of habitats within its distribution. Currently, there is no evaluation of Gelliodes fibulata's conservation status by the IUCN, CITES, or CMS. Divers encountering this species can observe its unique structure and role in the marine ecosystem, contributing to the biodiversity of sponge communities.
