Two-spotted Goby
Gobiusculus flavescens
The two-spotted goby (Gobiusculus flavescens) is a small goby reaching about 6 cm found in the northeastern Atlantic from Norway to the Mediterranean. It is translucent pinkish-orange with two distinct dark spots at the base of the tail fin. Unlike most gobies, it is a midwater swimmer rather than a bottom-dweller, hovering among kelp fronds and seaweed in small groups. It feeds on tiny planktonic crustaceans. Males develop brighter orange coloration during breeding season and guard egg clutches laid on the underside of rocks and shells. It is one of the most abundant small fish in northern European coastal waters and kelp forests.
