Green Bird Wrasse
Gomphosus caeruleus
The Green Bird Wrasse is a tropical reef fish known for its distinctive 'beak-like' snout. Males of this species are dark blue with lime green dorsal and anal fins, while females have a dark stripe through the eye and yellow anal and caudal fins. Juveniles are paler with a dusky streak from the snout through the eye. This species can be distinguished from the similar birdnose wrasse by its geographical distribution and the coloration differences in males and juveniles. This species inhabits coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs, as well as rocky reefs, in the Indian Ocean from East Africa to the Andaman Sea. Divers can encounter them at depths ranging from 1 to 35 meters. The Green Bird Wrasse is a solitary fish that feeds on small invertebrates. The IUCN lists the Green Bird Wrasse as Least Concern.
