Naked Sole
Gymnachirus melas
The Naked Sole, known scientifically as Gymnachirus melas, is a demersal fish found in the Western Atlantic, ranging from Massachusetts to southern Florida in the USA, as well as the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This species inhabits coastal waters and can be found at depths ranging from the shoreline down to 183 meters, although most are observed at depths shallower than 100 meters. With a maximum length of 22 cm, the Naked Sole is relatively small and can be identified by its flattened body typical of soles. Divers may encounter the Naked Sole on sandy or muddy bottoms where it blends into its surroundings, using its cryptic coloration for camouflage. This adaptation makes it an intriguing find for observant divers. The species is harmless to humans and is often caught as bycatch in shrimp trawls, although it holds minor commercial interest. The Naked Sole is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
