Natal Moray
Gymnothorax elaineheemstrae
The Natal Moray, a member of the Muraenidae family, is a reef-dwelling eel found primarily in the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around South Africa. This species can reach a maximum length of 71 cm and is characterized by its mottled and faintly reticulated coloration on a dark brown background. Its dorsal fin begins just before the gill opening, while the anal fin starts just behind the anus. The Natal Moray has distinctive long intermaxillary canines and small vomerine teeth arranged in a single row. Divers may encounter the Natal Moray in various marine habitats, including rocky reefs, intertidal zones, tide pools, and sandy bottoms, at depths of up to 40 meters. The species is considered harmless to humans and may be of potential interest to fisheries. When diving, encountering this eel can be an intriguing experience due to its cryptic nature and preference for hiding among rocks and crevices.
