Easter Island Moray Eel

Gymnothorax nasuta

The Easter Island moray (Gymnothorax nasuta) is a moray eel reaching up to 60 cm. It has a brownish body with a distinctive pointed snout, adapted to the volcanic rock reef habitat of Easter Island. Found in the southeastern Pacific around Easter Island and Chile, it inhabits rocky reefs and volcanic boulder fields at depths of 3 to 30 meters. This species shelters in the many crevices and holes provided by Easter Island's volcanic rock substrate, emerging at night to hunt small fish and invertebrates. As one of the endemic or near-endemic species of Easter Island's unique marine ecosystem, encountering it represents one of the special wildlife experiences available only at this remote Pacific island. Its rarity and restricted range make every sighting a notable event for visiting divers.
