Ghost Moray

Gymnothorax phasmatodes

The Ghost Moray, also known as Gymnothorax phasmatodes, is a distinctive moray eel found in the western Indian Ocean. Its pale yellow body, which becomes lighter on the underside, and a light blue dorsal margin make it recognizable to divers. This species can grow up to 46 cm in length and has an eel-like body shape typical of the Muraenidae family. Ghost Morays inhabit tropical marine environments, favoring sandy or rubble bottoms. They are often found in shallow waters, including tide pools, and are known to be nocturnal. Divers may encounter them at depths shallower than 40 meters, where they feed on small reef organisms. Observing these eels can be a unique experience, as they tend to be more active during the night. The Ghost Moray is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Despite being harmless to humans, it is only of minor commercial interest in fisheries. Divers exploring regions like Mozambique, Mauritius, Oman, the Philippines, and areas extending south to Australia and east to Papua New Guinea may have the opportunity to spot this elusive eel.
