Banded Rainbowfish

Halichoeres binotopsis

The Banded Rainbowfish, known scientifically as Halichoeres binotopsis, is a small species of wrasse found in the western Pacific Ocean, specifically from Singapore to western New Guinea, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. It reaches a maximum length of 8.9 cm and is characterized by a fusiform body shape. This fish can be distinguished from similar species, such as H. timorensis, by the more horizontal line pattern on its cheek. Inhabiting shallow coastal reef flats and gutters, the Banded Rainbowfish is typically found at depths ranging from 2 to 8 meters. These environments often feature algae and sparse coral growth. The species tends to form small, loose aggregations and displays territorial behavior, with males overseeing sections of the reef that contain numerous females. The Banded Rainbowfish is categorized as Least Concern by the IUCN. Encounters with this species while diving are likely to be peaceful, as they are harmless to humans. They are also of commercial interest for both fisheries and aquariums.
