Timor Wrasse

Halichoeres timorensis

The Timor Wrasse is a small reef-associated fish found in the Indo-West Pacific, specifically from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. It reaches a maximum length of 12.0 cm. Divers can identify this species by its distinctive cheek and body patterns, which feature more angular cheek lines compared to similar species like Halichoeres binotopsis. It typically inhabits shallow coastal reefs, preferring rock substrates with soft coral and algal growth. Timor Wrasses are usually found at depths ranging from 5 to 15 meters, although they have been recorded at depths shallower than 40 meters. These fish are often seen in small, loose groups dominated by a large male, but they can also be encountered alone. During the breeding season, they exhibit distinct pairing behavior. The species is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
