Harenactis attenuata

Harenactis attenuata is a sessile sea anemone species found in the Eastern Pacific, specifically along the coasts of the USA and Canada. This species belongs to the family Harenactidae and is part of the order Actiniaria. As a solitary organism, Harenactis attenuata does not form colonies, distinguishing it from many other coral species that often exhibit colonial behavior. Divers may encounter this species at various dive sites within its distribution range. In terms of reproduction, members of the class Anthozoa, which includes Harenactis attenuata, can be either gonochoric or hermaphroditic. The mature gametes are released into the coelenteron and subsequently spawned through the mouth. The life cycle involves the development of a planktonic planula larva, which undergoes metamorphosis. This process includes the early formation of tentacles, septa, and pharynx before the larva settles on the aboral end. Divers encountering this species will likely observe its sessile nature, as it remains attached to substrates in its subtropical habitat.
