Maldives Triplefin
Helcogramma maldivensis
The Maldives Triplefin is a small reef fish endemic to the Maldives, specifically recorded in the southern part of the Male Atoll. It inhabits shallow lagoons with sandy bottoms, typically found at depths ranging from 0 to 10 meters. This species is characterized by its elongated body and distinctive fin structure, with 15 to 17 dorsal spines and 9 to 11 dorsal soft rays. Males are generally reddish with bluish dots and streaks on their heads, forming stripes on the body, while females are paler with translucent fins. The Maldives Triplefin is a demersal fish, meaning it lives and feeds near the bottom of the ocean. Its eggs are hemispherical and adhere to algae through sticky threads, providing a secure environment for development. The larvae are planktonic, primarily found in shallow, nearshore waters. Encounters with the Maldives Triplefin during dives are likely to be in shallow waters, where divers can observe their subtle coloration and behavior. The IUCN lists this species as Data Deficient.
