Tropical Striped Triplefin
Helcogramma striata
The tropical striped triplefin (Helcogramma striata) is a tiny, brilliantly colored blenny-like fish reaching only 4 cm in length. It features vivid horizontal stripes of red, orange, and blue along its body with three separate dorsal fins characteristic of the triplefin family. Found across the central Indo-Pacific from the Maldives to the western Pacific, it inhabits coral rubble, dead coral, and rocky substrates at depths of 2 to 30 meters. This species perches on exposed surfaces using its pelvic fins as props, making short darting movements to capture tiny zooplankton and invertebrates. Males become more brightly colored during courtship displays. Despite its diminutive size, its intense coloration makes it a highly sought-after subject for macro photographers who enjoy searching coral rubble for tiny treasures.
