Blood Sea Star
Henricia sanguinolenta
The blood sea star (Henricia sanguinolenta) is a delicate starfish reaching up to 20 cm in diameter. It has five slender, tapering arms and a vivid blood-red to orange coloration with a smooth, fine-textured surface. Found in the North Atlantic and North Pacific from the Arctic to the temperate zones, it inhabits rocky substrates, cobble fields, and sponge-encrusted surfaces at depths of 0 to 2,500 meters, though most commonly found at 10 to 200 meters. Unlike most sea stars, it does not evert its stomach to feed. Instead, it filter-feeds on suspended organic particles and bacteria using ciliated surfaces. It is a brooding species, with females protecting developing embryos under their bodies. Its striking blood-red coloration against cold-water rocky reefs makes it a photogenic and commonly encountered invertebrate for temperate and cold-water divers.
