Red Snakefish

Holothuria flavomaculata

Holothuria flavomaculata is a large sea cucumber characterized by its elongated body, which can range in color from dark grey to bluish-black, brownish-red, or black. It features notable pinkish, orangy, or reddish tips on its large papillae, along with yellowish tentacles. This species typically grows to an average length of 35 cm but can reach up to 60 cm. Divers may recognize it by its distinctive coloration and size, setting it apart from other sea cucumbers in the region. This species inhabits the Indo-Pacific, found in locations such as the Hawaiian Islands, Madagascar, and the Red Sea, among others. Holothuria flavomaculata prefers environments covered in muck, sand, or coral debris, residing at depths ranging from 1 to 40 meters, with most occurrences noted shallower than 40 meters. They are often found among dead corals and in detrital zones on outer reef flats. Feeding primarily on organic matter, this sea cucumber consumes ooze from sea plants. It reproduces through external fertilization, with embryos developing into planktotrophic larvae before metamorphosing into juvenile sea cucumbers. Encounters with Holothuria flavomaculata during dives can be intriguing, as they often blend into their surroundings but may be spotted foraging on the seafloor. The conservation status of Holothuria flavomaculata is listed as Least Concern, indicating that it is not currently facing significant threats in its natural habitat. However, it is commercially harvested in several regions, including Palau and the Solomon Islands.
