Hyattella cavernosa

Hyattella cavernosa is a sponge found primarily in the tropical waters of the Western Central Atlantic, particularly in the Caribbean. This sessile organism inhabits depths ranging from 2 to 73 meters, often residing in environments such as coral reefs and rocky reefs. Divers encountering this species may find it attached to substrates on the ocean floor, where it contributes to the complex reef ecosystem. The reproductive cycle of Hyattella cavernosa involves a hermaphroditic process, common among Demospongiae sponges. The life cycle begins with the zygote developing into a free-swimming parenchymella larva. This larva eventually settles on a suitable substrate, where it grows into a mature sponge. The species is harmless to humans and does not have any known threats or uses. The conservation status of Hyattella cavernosa has not been evaluated, and it is not listed under any international conservation frameworks. Divers can observe this species year-round, as there is no noted seasonality in its presence.
