Hymeniacidon heliophila

Hymeniacidon heliophila is a sponge species belonging to the family Halichondriidae and order Suberitida. It is primarily found in tropical waters of the Western Central Atlantic and Western Central Pacific. It thrives in various habitats, including bays, mangroves, and submerged vegetation, often attaching itself to hard substrates. As a sessile organism, Hymeniacidon heliophila remains fixed in place, filtering water to obtain its nutrients. It is part of the class Demospongiae, which are known for being hermaphroditic. The reproductive cycle involves the development of a free-swimming parenchymella larva from a zygote, which eventually settles onto a suitable substrate to grow into a young sponge. Divers encountering this sponge may find it in environments rich with submerged vegetation and mangroves. Its presence contributes to the complex ecosystem of these areas, providing habitat and contributing to the ecological balance. Currently, there is no evaluation of its conservation status by the IUCN, and its rarity in the wild has not been documented.
