Barred Blenny

Hypleurochilus bermudensis

The barred blenny is a small reef-associated fish found in the western Atlantic Ocean, specifically around Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Florida. It reaches a maximum length of 10 centimeters and is known for its fusiform body shape. Divers may encounter this species in coral reefs, where it inhabits rocky bottoms and coral rubble. The barred blenny is typically found in shallow waters, with most occurrences recorded at depths of less than 20 meters. This species is oviparous, with distinct pairing during the breeding season. The eggs are demersal and adhere to substrates via a filamentous pad. After hatching, the larvae are planktonic and often found in coastal waters. Divers observing the barred blenny may notice its preference for staying close to the substrate. It is harmless to humans and is not of interest to fisheries. According to the IUCN Red List, the barred blenny is categorized as Least Concern.
