Campbell's Sandgoby

Istigobius campbelli

Campbell's Sandgoby, a member of the goby family, is a small reef fish found in the Northwest Pacific, particularly around southern Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This species is typically seen in shallow marine environments, preferring sandy bottoms at depths between 3 and 14 meters. Divers might encounter this fish either alone or in small groups, often near crevices or under stones where it can find shelter. The fish is characterized by a dusky brown body adorned with red spots and distinctive blue spots on its operculum. A black line runs from its eye to the base of the pectoral fin, and it features a unique inverted 'U'-shaped blotch on its cheek. The dorsal and anal fins of males sometimes reach the caudal fin, while in females, these fins end a few scales short of the caudal fin. Campbell's Sandgoby is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Divers observing this species might notice its preference for sandy habitats, where it blends in well with its surroundings, making it a subtle yet interesting find during a dive.
