Spinnaker Anemone
Korsaranthus natalensis
The spinnaker anemone, also known as Korsaranthus natalensis, is a medium-sized sea anemone reaching up to 10 cm in diameter. It is characterized by its vivid red and white striped appearance, with approximately 50 broadly striped tentacles. The column of the anemone features fine striping, while red and pink lines radiate outward from its central mouth. A distinctive feature of this species is its walking disc, which is red with white striping and aids in its mobility. This anemone is endemic to the South African coast, with its range extending from False Bay to Durban. It inhabits waters at depths ranging from 10 to at least 30 meters. The spinnaker anemone is considered a rare species and is known for its mobility, as it can detach from the reef and use its parachute-like walking disc to sail to new locations. Its diet consists of octocorals. Divers encountering the spinnaker anemone might observe its unique sailing behavior as it moves to different locations. Its rarity makes it a special sighting for divers exploring the South African coastal waters.
