Cymbal Bubble Snail

Lamprohaminoea cymbalum

Lamprohaminoea cymbalum, known as the cymbal bubble snail, is a small marine gastropod with soft tissues that are lime green, accented by orange and purple markings. This species can be found in the Indo-West Pacific region, specifically from Hawaii to Christmas Island, typically residing in shallow waters. It prefers a benthic environment and is usually found at depths ranging from 0 to 20 meters, although it can be located in areas as deep as 40 meters. While not commonly encountered, it can form large populations in certain locales. This herbivorous snail primarily feeds on algae, utilizing a unique metabolite that deters carnivorous fish from preying on it. Members of the order Cephalaspidea, to which it belongs, are generally simultaneous hermaphrodites, suggesting a complex reproductive strategy that allows for greater flexibility in mating. Diving encounters with Lamprohaminoea cymbalum may reveal these snails in clusters, grazing on algae-covered substrates. Their distinctive coloration can help divers identify them among other marine life. Although the conservation status of this species has not been evaluated, it is considered uncommon in many areas.
