Convict Snake Eel

Leiuranus versicolor

The Convict snake eel is a marine species belonging to the family Ophichthidae, commonly referred to as worm or snake eels. It can be identified by its elongated, eel-like body and distinctive banding pattern, which includes a thin white bar in the middle of each band. This tropical eel is found in the Pacific Ocean, specifically around Palau, Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Norfolk Island. It inhabits inshore regions with soft bottoms, where it creates burrows at depths ranging from 3 to 18 meters. Divers encountering the Convict snake eel may find it partially buried in the sand, with only its head visible. This species is harmless to humans and is known for its burrowing behavior. The Convict snake eel is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN. For divers, spotting a Convict snake eel can be an intriguing experience, as these eels are often well-camouflaged within their sandy habitats. Observing their behavior, such as emerging from burrows, can provide a unique insight into their lifestyle within the reef ecosystem.
