Leucetta microraphis

Leucetta microraphis is a sponge species that belongs to the family Leucettidae and order Clathrinida. This sponge is stationary, attaching itself to surfaces in its environment. It is found in tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, Western Atlantic, and the Mediterranean, inhabiting depths from the surface down to 100 meters, with most sightings occurring at less than 70 meters. Divers may spot Leucetta microraphis in diverse marine settings like coral and rocky reefs. It plays a vital role in its ecosystem by filtering plankton and other small particles from the water for nourishment. Its distinctive structure and ecological role make it an intriguing subject for underwater exploration. As a member of the class Calcarea, Leucetta microraphis is hermaphroditic. Its life cycle involves the development of a free-swimming larva, which eventually settles on a surface and matures into a sponge. The conservation status of this species has not been assessed, and it is harmless to humans.
