Leuckartiara octona

Leuckartiara octona is a pelagic species found in a variety of temperate waters, including the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. This species typically inhabits depths ranging from 0 to 210 meters, with a significant number of occurrences recorded at shallower depths, particularly under 40 meters. It is often found in subtropical regions, showcasing a preference for environments with hard substrates where it can attach and thrive. Divers may encounter this species in open-water settings, where it can be distinguished by its unique morphology compared to other hydroids and medusae, particularly during its medusae stage when it releases gametes for reproduction.  The species exhibits both asexual reproduction through budding and sexual reproduction during its medusae stage, contributing to its life cycle in the marine ecosystem. Encountering Leuckartiara octona while diving can be an interesting experience, as it may appear as a drifting organism in the water column, often blending with the surrounding environment.  Due to its pelagic nature, divers should be attentive to their surroundings to spot this species, which may be less conspicuous than other marine life. Its conservation status is currently not evaluated, indicating a lack of comprehensive data on its population dynamics and threats.
