Fijian Root Coral

Lobophyllia vitiensis

Fijian Root Coral, belonging to the family Lobophylliidae, is a reef-associated species found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Its distribution ranges from Madagascar to Polynesia, extending north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to Australia. This coral is typically found at depths ranging from 0 to 50 meters, with most occurrences recorded shallower than 40 meters. Morphologically, Fijian Root Coral can vary significantly in size and form depending on its environment. In subtropical areas, it often appears flat and solitary, measuring less than 60 mm across. In tropical regions, it tends to be larger and sometimes forms colonial structures. The coral's fleshy mantle exhibits a distinct concentric texture due to the slope of the septa and costae. It is usually dark green or tan in color, making it identifiable among other coral species. Fijian Root Coral is hermaphroditic, with mature gametes being released into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. The life cycle includes a planktonic planula larva stage, which undergoes metamorphosis before settling. The species is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
