Lovenia elongata

Lovenia elongata is a species of sea urchin characterized by its elongated body shape. It can be found in the Indo-West Pacific region, typically inhabiting sandy and muddy bottoms. This sea urchin prefers depths ranging from 0 to 94 meters, with most occurrences recorded shallower than 40 meters. Divers may encounter Lovenia elongata at various dive sites, where it often blends into its environment, making it somewhat cryptic against the substrate. Its external fertilization and brooding behavior are notable, as eggs are often held on the peristome or in the petaloids. The larvae develop into planktotrophic forms before settling on the ocean floor to metamorphose into juvenile urchins. Encountering this species during a dive may involve observing it nestled in the sand or mud, often accompanied by other benthic organisms. Lovenia elongata's conservation status has not been evaluated, indicating a lack of specific data regarding population trends or threats to its habitat.
