Pacific Red Snapper

Lutjanus peru

The Pacific red snapper (Lutjanus peru) is a large, reef-associated fish found in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Adults reach 70-95 cm in length and display a deep red to pinkish-red body that is deeper and more robust than many other snapper species. They inhabit rocky reefs, coral formations, and adjacent sandy areas at depths of 5-80 meters. As opportunistic predators, they feed on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. They are often found solitary or in small groups near rocky outcrops and ledges during the day. Juveniles may occur in shallower waters including mangrove areas. Their large size and striking red coloration make them an impressive sight on eastern Pacific dives, particularly around the Sea of Cortez, Costa Rica, and the Galapagos Islands. They are an important commercial and recreational fish species throughout their range and are commonly encountered by divers exploring deep reef walls and rocky pinnacles.
