Blue Banded Goby

Lythrypnus gilberti

The Blue Banded Goby is a small, bold, and aggressive fish that inhabits the rocky reefs, slopes, and walls of the Southeast Pacific, specifically around the Galapagos Islands. It can be identified by its diminutive size, reaching a maximum length of 4.5 cm. This tiny fish is known for living in small recesses where it can be seen darting around its habitat. This species thrives in tropical marine environments, typically found at depths ranging from 1 to 40 meters. It is a reef-associated fish, often seen in the shallower parts of the reef. The Blue Banded Goby feeds primarily on small crustaceans, making it an integral part of the reef's ecosystem by controlling the population of these invertebrates. Encounters with the Blue Banded Goby during dives are common due to its territorial nature. Divers may observe its bold behavior as it defends its small territory. Despite its aggressive demeanor, the Blue Banded Goby poses no threat to humans. According to the IUCN Red List, it is currently classified as Least Concern.
