Headband Headshield Slug

Mariaglaja inornata

Mariaglaja inornata exhibits a purplish black body adorned with tiny white dots that are densely scattered across its parapodia and foot. The edges of the parapodia are often white, featuring either a continuous or broken line. A distinctive broad white band runs across the front of its head-shield, complemented by yellow or orange edges on the antero-lateral lobes. Its eyes are located within translucent areas devoid of black pigment, which can give off a blue appearance. This species is primarily found in the tropical Western Pacific, ranging from Japan to eastern Australia, and inhabits benthic environments. It is typically recorded at depths shallower than 40 meters, with 90% of occurrences at around 20 meters or less. The maximum length of this species is about 4.0 cm. As a simultaneous hermaphrodite, Mariaglaja inornata engages in a reproductive strategy that allows for both male and female functions. Encounters with this slug during dives can be intriguing, as divers may observe its unique coloration and behavior in its natural habitat. Although its conservation status has not been evaluated, indicating a lack of specific data regarding its population trends and threats.
