Southern Elephant Seal

Mirounga leonina

The southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) is the largest pinniped and largest marine carnivore, with bulls reaching 4.2 to 5.8 meters and 1,500 to 3,700 kg. Males develop a large inflatable proboscis used to produce thunderous roars during breeding season. This species shows the greatest sexual dimorphism of any mammal, with males five to six times heavier than females. Found across the Southern Hemisphere from sub-Antarctic islands to Antarctica, they haul out on beaches in large colonies during breeding and molting seasons. They are extraordinary divers, capable of reaching depths over 1,000 meters and holding their breath for up to two hours while hunting squid, octopus, and fish. Divers in sub-Antarctic waters may encounter curious juveniles underwater, while topside encounters at breeding colonies are unforgettable wildlife experiences.
