Giant Hairy Triton Snail

Monoplex parthenopeus

Monoplex parthenopeus, commonly known as the Giant Hairy Triton Snail, is a large marine gastropod that can reach a maximum shell length of 180 mm. This species displays a distinctive appearance with its hairy exterior, which helps differentiate it from other triton snails. It is found in various regions worldwide, including the Western Atlantic Ocean and New Zealand, thriving in benthic environments. The Giant Hairy Triton typically inhabits depths ranging from 0 to 75 meters, often residing on rocky substrates or offshore banks. As a predatory species, the Giant Hairy Triton primarily feeds on other mollusks, utilizing its specialized adaptations to hunt effectively. Its life cycle is notable for the long planktonic period of its larvae, which can remain in the plankton for nearly 300 days and disperse over distances of up to 4000 km. This extended larval duration is the longest recorded for any marine invertebrate, allowing for wide distribution across various marine environments. Encountering a Giant Hairy Triton while diving can be an interesting experience, as they may be found in both shallow and deeper waters. Divers should be mindful of their habitat and approach slowly to observe their behavior without disturbing them.
