Myrmekioderma granulatum

Myrmekioderma granulatum is a sponge species in the family Heteroxyidae, found in the Indo-West Pacific. This sessile organism remains anchored in one place, commonly found on coral platforms, sandy and silty coral pools, beach rock, and dead coral surfaces. It also thrives on pristine coral reef slopes. Divers may encounter this species from shallow sublittoral zones to depths of 20 meters, although it can be found as deep as 100 meters according to some records. This sponge is a filter-feeder, depending on water currents to deliver plankton and other small organic particles for sustenance. As part of the Demospongiae class, Myrmekioderma granulatum is hermaphroditic. Its life cycle includes a free-swimming larval stage known as parenchymella, which eventually settles on a suitable substrate to develop into a mature sponge. Diving encounters with Myrmekioderma granulatum can be intriguing due to its unique structure and ecological role. However, its conservation status has not been evaluated by the IUCN.
