Coronated Dogwhelk

Nassarius coronatus

Nassarius coronatus is a marine gastropod with an ovate, smooth, and polished shell that typically measures between 18 mm and 35 mm in length. The shell displays a variable coloration of bluish ash, reddish, or brown, adorned with narrow, white longitudinal lines. It is distinguishable from similar species, such as Nassarius arcularia plicatus, by its more elongated spire and less flaring columella. The aperture of the shell is dark brown with a light band, featuring a thin outer lip crowned with small, pointed denticulations. This species inhabits shallow sandy environments across a wide distribution, including the Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, and various locations in the Indo-Pacific, extending from East and South Africa to southern Japan and southern Queensland. It is typically found at depths ranging from 0 to 10 meters. As an omnivore and facultative scavenger, the Coronated Dogwhelk feeds on small invertebrates and organic matter, utilizing its adaptations to thrive in its benthic habitat. Nassarius coronatus is a non-broadcast spawner, and its life cycle does not include a trocophore stage. Encountering this species while diving can be intriguing, as they often blend into their sandy surroundings. Divers may observe them moving slowly across the substrate or resting partially buried in the sand. The conservation status of this species is not evaluated, indicating a lack of specific data regarding its population trends.
