Multi-Barred Cardinalfish

Nectamia luxuria

The Multi-barred Cardinalfish is a small reef-associated fish found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Maldives to Mangareva Island and south to Australia. It reaches a maximum length of 7.7 cm and can be identified by its many pale bars on the body, an incomplete dark wide bar on the caudal peduncle, and dark margins on the caudal fin. Unlike some similar species, it lacks a dark saddle below the second dorsal fin and features a subocular mark that is thin and triangular. This species is typically found in tropical waters at depths ranging from the surface to 11 meters. It forms aggregations, often among branching corals, making it a common sight for divers exploring coral reefs. The Multi-barred Cardinalfish is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Divers encountering this species can expect to see it in groups, blending into the coral environment. Its behavior and habitat preferences make it a notable subject for underwater observation.
