Dark Mantis Shrimp

Neogonodactylus curacaoensis

The Dark Mantis Shrimp is a member of the crustacean family Gonodactylidae, found in the Western Atlantic and Western Pacific regions. It inhabits coral reefs, particularly in subtidal areas, at depths ranging from 1 to 38 meters. This species is benthic, meaning it lives on the ocean floor, often in coral-rich environments. The reproductive behavior of the Dark Mantis Shrimp is intriguing, as some members of its order, Stomatopoda, form lifelong pairs, while others come together solely for mating. Females are capable of brooding up to 50,000 eggs, which hatch into a planktonic zoea stage lasting about three months. This species is considered harmless to humans and has not been evaluated for conservation status by the IUCN. Divers observing the Dark Mantis Shrimp may notice its cryptic nature, as it often blends into its surroundings. An encounter with this species can be a unique experience, given its specialized habitat and reproductive behaviors.
