Spotted Pipefish

Nerophis maculatus

The spotted pipefish is a slender, eel-like fish that can reach a maximum length of 30 cm. It is typically found in the Eastern Atlantic, including the waters around Portugal and the Azores, as well as throughout the Mediterranean Sea, with a notable presence in the Adriatic Sea and the western Mediterranean. Divers are most likely to encounter this species in coastal waters, where it inhabits rocky sites and areas rich in aquatic plants and algae. This species is known for its ovoviviparous reproductive strategy. The male spotted pipefish carries the fertilized eggs in a brood pouch located under his tail, providing protection until they hatch. This unique breeding behavior is a characteristic trait of the family Syngnathidae, to which the spotted pipefish belongs. The conservation status of the spotted pipefish is currently not evaluated by the IUCN. Divers may find this species at depths of up to 50 meters, where it blends well with its surroundings due to its slender, elongated body shape.
