Pejerrey
Odontesthes bonariensis
The pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis), also known as the Argentinian silverside, is an elegant freshwater fish reaching up to 52 cm. It has a slender, elongated body with a silvery lateral band, a translucent greenish back, and a slightly protruding lower jaw. Native to subtropical and temperate South America from the Rio Negro basin to the Rio de la Plata basin in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil, it inhabits freshwater lakes, rivers, and estuaries at depths of 0 to 20 meters. This species forms large, shimmering schools that can number in the thousands. It feeds primarily on zooplankton and small crustaceans. Considered Argentina's national freshwater fish and an important recreational target, encountering a massive school of pejerrey during a freshwater dive creates a spectacular silver curtain effect in the water column.
