Fiery Nudibranch
Okenia amoenula
The fiery nudibranch (Okenia amoenula) is a small dorid nudibranch in the family Goniodorididae. Adults are tiny, typically reaching only 5-15 mm. They display a vivid orange to red-orange body covered with elongated papillae that give them a flame-like appearance. The body is soft and flattened with projections around the mantle edge. This species inhabits rocky and sandy reef areas along the Pacific coast of North America, from British Columbia to Baja California, at depths of 5-30 meters. They feed primarily on bryozoans. Due to their extremely small size, they require careful searching and a keen eye to locate, making them a rewarding find for divers and macro photographers. Their intense coloration against the often muted reef background creates spectacular photographic opportunities.
